Puglia, in south-eastern Italy offers a colourful history, and a breathtaking natural heritage. Learn as you have fun in this sun-drenched heaven held in turn by the Greeks, the Romans, the Ottomans, the Spaniards, each leaving their vestiges, in monuments and architecture, culture and traditions.

A splendid coast of breathtakingly beautiful sea, staggering rock formations, and soft sandy beaches, edges on to splendid fields of ancient olive trees and vineyards offering delicious wines, and spectacular towns. These include the seaside, white-washed town of Ostuni; funky Alberobello, famous as the Trulli town, and composed of innumerable cone shaped dwellings, now full of delightful shops of craftsmen and artisans; beautiful Baroque Lecce; and the nearby Locorotonda and Martina Franca, where you can hang out in charming piazzas, bordered by seignorial mansions and towering Baroque facades, friendly cafe’s and restaurants, farmers' markets, nearby vineyards and olive groves. Don’t miss the beautiful Black horses at liberty in a nearby estate.

The Martina Franca/Locorotondo area

Here lies one of the most characteristic towns of the Puglia region. The old town has the great tourist appeal, with its fabulous and completely intact baroque buildings. The town of Martina Franca offers a unique setting and dominates the Valle d'Itria, known as the Valley of the Trulli ,with its vineyards, small groups of houses, stone walls and open countryside.

The climate adds to the appeal, and, due to its position 400 metres above sea level, a wonderfully mild temperature throughout the summer months is guaranteed. The architecture of the historic part of town is charming with small white houses, narrow lanes, wrought iron balconies covered in flowers, Palazzi and Churches, and monuments including the gateway Porta di St. Antonio, the Arch of St Stefano, Palazzo Ducale, the Collegiate of St Martino and the Palazzo of the University of Martina Franca. –

Do not miss an opportunity to get lost in the small alleys of the ancient town. But not to worrry, in the end you will because familiar with its landmarks, and feel at home. Martina has a reputation for grear clothes shopping: the street facing the Stradone (main square with trees) after the church located behind the trees of the Villa Comunale, has plenty of elegant (sometimes expensive) shops.

Local activities include cycling, diving, fishing, golf, horse riding, mountain biking, paragliding, surfing, swimming, tennis, walking; Other Activities: cooking lessons, wine tasting, seasonal concerts.

Trulli Lovely
Posted on: 09/12/2011

Just returned from 9-night stay in one of the apartments in this BEAUTIFUL Masseria, which I am happy to warmly recommend.

Booking was straightforward: every email question answered promptly and helpfully. We were warmly greeted when we arrived, to find description & pictures absolutely true - if, indeed, not better! We peeked into the other accommodation as well: the standard great everywhere. Everything has been sensitively transformed for 21st century expectations, whilst respecting original character of both masseria and trulli. So you can chose rustic simplicity (still comfortable) or more classy. All beautifully and carefully presented and spotlessly clean.
Lovely central courtyard between the trulli, farmhouse and pool enclosure, with olive trees, tables & chairs. If you come with children they will be entertained by the kittens (well, cats by next summer!). This place has an authentic feel - it's not just tourist veneer. Delightful Raffaelle was around - discretely - each day, friendly and very patient with non-Italian speakers. English not spoken so much in this area as other more tourist-accustomed parts of Italy: so much the better. You really know you are visiting another country. Smiles & miming go a long way!! Try learning a little Italian before you come.

The location is fantastic: peacefully rural for relaxing days, but really well placed for the many gorgeous local villages & small towns, with their charming old buildings & narrow winding streets and colourful, lively markets. We really enjoyed the local festival - brilliant OTT firework display. (Seem to be lots of festivals all summer!) Plenty for further afield trips too. Owner provided great information (emailed in advance so you can plan ahead - but make sure you print it out!). Food everywhere fabulous & very reasonable eating out: follow the owner's suggestions.
I unhesitatingly recommend this for a quiet, relaxing holiday; probably not the best location if you've got teenagers (tho' a hammock is strung between the olive trees, so someone could just sleep all day!).

We hired a car in Bari - having travelled by train from Paris (recommended). Public transport more available than sounded in property description: (train to Locorotondo) and buses connect the local towns along main roads. So serious non-car users could find this worked, providing you are adults-only party, prepared to walk. (Nearest bus route about 1 to 1 1/2 miles down to main road)

Great place!

That is music to our ears! And so beautifully said. Thank you from us all.

P.S. In summer both nearby villages have plenty of concerts and events in the evenings which would be great for teenagers ( and safe!)

Fab Family Holiday!
Posted on: 09/12/2011

Having been to Puglia several times on our own, my wife and I decided to take as many members of our extended family as we could muster to show them what we loved about this part of Italy. Ten of us including mother in law, Auntie , daughter and son in law and toddler grandchild , another daughter, son and son's girlfriend rented the whole Masseria taking all three apartments for a week.

It is a very tastefully restored and well furnished farmhouse with a pool and hot tub and acres of peaceful rural space around. We all fitted in very well and enjoyed the facilities. The kitchens in the two downstairs apartments are particularly well appointed and spacious and were used for communal meals. Raffaele the farm manager was ready to help with any queries or problems. Some of Italy's most picturesque small towns are nearby. The food everywhere, whether at a simple agritourist farm or sophisticated town centre restaurant, was excellent and waiters would often bring us all free appetizers or desserts. One of our daughters is vegetarian but had no problems at all (not the case for vegetarians in parts of France or Greece)

We would thoroughly recommend this property either as a whole house for a large group or any of the apartments taken separately - we peeked inside the trulli apartments and they looked equally well furnished and comfortable too.

Thank you, thank you, thank you!

Nothing makes us happier than to know that our Guests have had a successful holiday and that they appreciate the Masseria and this wonderful area as much as we do. All best wishes, and do come back!
